Bringing Depth and Colour to Songs

  • Use your volume knob! Listen to the level of other singers or the volume needed for that type of song and adjust accordingly
  • Harmonising. The best way to learn to harmonise is either to read music and write in harmonies that fit or to listen to a CD and sing a long.
  • Try harmonies both above and below - try to be able to do both but when singing in a meeting keep your harmonies consistent throughout the song (i.e. don't experiment all over the place/jump from high to low etc.)
  • Try two and three part harmonies - one person/group singing the melody, one doing a harmony below and one above
  • Ad libbing/singing in the Spirit. You can do this:
    • At the end of a song over a riff. Pick some words from the song you've just sung
    • In between song words. Choose a song with lots of musical 'space' in it
    • Pick out a psalm to use over a riff. Don't sing the whole thing - just pick a few verses and sing them in your own words. Suggestions Psalm 33/66/95/105/121/138
